Point of Divergence: On the night of Christmas Eve 1773, Governor of Quebec Guy Carleton is murdered by a gang of thieves. The criminals are never caught, however the British assume that the attackers were French-Canadian nationalists. As a result, the British decide to impose hefty taxes on the Quebecois and their Anglophone neighbors.

  • 1776 - Quebec joins the colonies in their revolt against the British. The Declaration of Independence is signed by the thirteen colonies on July 4, 1776. Due to a delay of their delegates, Quebec is not present at the signing and issues the Quebecois Declaration of Independence on July 10. The British send reinforcements to North America.
  • 1777 - The French join the American Revolution in March. General George Washington is tragically killed during combat at the Battle of Brandywine. Artemas Ward assumes the command of Washington's army.

  • 1789 - Artemas Ward is elected as the 1st President of the United States, winning every state that had ratified the Constitution. The French Revolution begins. Given Ward's interest and passion for politics (contrasted with Washington's), Ward does not pursue a policy of neutrality in regards to the French Revolutionary Wars.
  • 1792 - President Ward is reelected for a second term unopposed.
  • 1793 - American volunteers, mostly from Quebec, are recruited by Edmond-Charles Genêt to fight the Spanish in the Floridas.
  • 1796 - Republican Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson narrowly defeats Federalist Vice President Henry Lee III.
  • 1806 - War of 1806 begins between the United Kingdom and the United States. France and Spain ally with the Americans.
  • 1808 - Given the unpopularity of the War of 1806, President James Madison narrowly loses reelection to New York Governor John Jay, who was running on a platform of peace and prosperity.
  • 1809 - War of 1806 ends with the Treaty of Dover. Britain sells Rupert's Land to the United States for three cents an acre, further opening the United States up for westward and northward expansion. The war is a pyrrhic victory for the United States.
