Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • 1777 – The American Patriots lose to the British at the Battle of Bemis Heights. General Horatio Gates surrenders and is captured by the British. After this defeat, the French decline to extend military support to the Patriots.
  • 1778 – The Kingdom of France declares war on Prussia in favor of Austria.
  • 1780 – The American Revolution draws to a close. Seeing the writing on the wall and facing the threat of hanging for treason, the Continental Congress lobbies with Dutch envoys to allow Americans to resettle in their Cape Colony. The Dutch accept, and mass migrations of pro-independence of Americans begin.
  • 1780–1786 – About 250,000 Americans move to the Cape in this time. Wealthier plantation-class Americans also bring their slaves and set up plots of land for mass farming. The small Dutch Boer population soon becomes assimilated into the predominantly Anglophone American population.
  • 1789 – French Revolution begins. Despite not participating in the failed American Revolution, their involvement in the War of the Bavarian Succession, where France lost yet again, intensified France's financial woes.
  • 1793 – King Louis XVI executed. French nobles begin to flee France and, like the American revolutionaries, head for the Dutch Cape.
  • 1795 – The Dutch Republic falls to the French. Shortly after, the Cape Assembly (led by Thomas Jefferson) formally declares independence from the Dutch, naming itself the "Union of the Cape." France formally recognizes the new republic.
  • 1797 – The British attempt to seize the Cape. The Royal Navy makes landings in Cape Town, however are pushed out by local militias at the Second Battle of Cape Town. The British attempt landings at New Boston and Metropolis.
  • 1798 – The British and the Cape sign a white peace, with the British respecting the Cape's sovereignty.
  • 1799 – The National Assembly approves a name-change for the Cape, formally becoming the "Union of Azania." Azania was the term given by the Greeks and Romans to Southern Africa. Prime Minister Jefferson, after rumblings of a anti-revolutionary coup by French exiles, formally passes the "Immigration and Citizenship Acts," curtailing the flow of refugees from Europe and barring various refugees from getting immediate citizenship. This is condemned by many, including his deputy and ally Gilbert du Motier.
  • 1800 – Despite controversies surrounding his premiership, Jefferson's Republicans secure their majority in the Assembly.
  • 1803 – The War of the Third Coalition begins. Naval quarrels take place between Azanian and British ships over impressment.
  • 1805 – Britain tries a second seizure of Azania after Admiral John Paul Jones sunk three British warships in a shocking defeat. However, the British blockade is lifted as the Royal Navy becomes overstretched and suffers a defeat at Trafalgar.
  • 1806 – France emerges victorious again. The Holy Roman Empire is disestablished and the Bonapartist Confederation of the Rhine is created.
  • 1815 – Azania purchases Angola, Cabinda, and Mozambique from Lusitania. The free population crosses 1,000,000 citizens.
  • 1818 – The City of Liberty (Johannesburg) is established. As Azania improves its rail networks and settlers continue pushing north, it will become the capital in 1836.
  • 1820s – Independence movements across Spanish America. Spain initially tries to put them down, but the French Revolutionary Wars proved that Spain was not the power she once was.
  • 1823 – As clashes continue between Natives and Azanians, the Azanian Army is sent to put down the rebellious Zulu tribe. Within nine months, most of the tribe is either enslaved or dead. Prime Minister Lee touts the Zulu defeat as an example of Azanian strength. This marks the beginning of the Continentalism movement, a belief that Azania has a right and duty to "pacify and civilize" the entire continent of Africa.
