Timeline[edit | edit source]
- July 1898 – General Yuan Shikai marches his army to Tientsin and kills Ronglu, an opponent of the Hundred Days' Reform and an ally of Empress Dowager Cixi. Shikai then marches to Beijing and places Emprees Dowager Cixi under house arrest, stripping her of her power in China. In exchange for his services, Yuan Shikai is promised a post as the Prime Minister of China following the reforms.
- July–September 1898 – China, similarly to Japan under the Meiji Emperor, undertakes a rapid plan to modernize. In late September, the Guangxu Constitution is ratified. The Emperor relinquishes much of his power in favor of a constitutional monarchy and creating a bicameral Imperial Assembly. Military and trade schools open up across China. Foreign investment is also welcomed to help open new factories in Chinese cities.
- 1898–99 – The Boxer Uprisings are put down by the Chinese Imperial Army, albeit facing vicious fighting. Foreign advisors come to China to help the Imperial military modernize.
- 1911 – The Guangxu Emperor passes away. The Xuantong Emperor, at 5 years old, ascends to the imperial throne.
- 1914 – The Great War begins. Germany and Austria-Hungary are at war with France, Britain, and Russia. After Japan's entry in favor of the British, Germany lobbies for China to enter on behalf of the Central Powers. China soon declares war on Russia and Japan.
- 1916 – The Russian Empire sues for peace with the Central Powers, however the Chinese and Japanese continue to fight around Manchuria and Vladivostok.
- 1917 – France is overwhelmed by German forces, and as they near Paris, sue for peace. Britain, the last great power at war with the Central Powers, soon announces a cease fire. Germany, Austria-Hungary, China, and the Ottomans have emerged victorious.
- 1918 – China receives all of Britain and France's that were given through unequal treaties, along with gaining hegemony over Indochina. Outer Manchuria is left in limbo due to the ongoing Russian Civil War (far different from OTL) and the continued presence of Japanese forces.
